Special Notes: Threatened by poaching for traditional medicine market as HIV treatment (doesn’t work).   It is the sole species in the genus Stangeria.
Native to: South Africa - Forests of Kwa Zulu Natal Province
Form: Trunks subterranean, leaflets serrated on margins but not spiny, cones small and spindle shaped
Size: Leaves to 1 meter
Light: Prefers shade
Water: Water in summer
Hardiness:  to 27 F.  Leaves will die back but re-sprout after a freeze
Soil: Sandy, acidic
